Sidney Moncrief is the original Defensive Player of the Year, as the NBA did not create the award until the 1982-83 season. Moncrief won the first two Defensive Player of the Year Awards and was one of the best defenders to ever play the guard position. Moncrief was also named to five All-Defensive teams in his 11-year career.
