History Of Athletes Involved In Political Activism

More than ever, today’s athletes are inserting themselves in the political arena. I take a look at the athletes who were pioneers in taking political stances.

Over the last few years, we have witnessed a political movement that has grown. Some of the biggest names in sports have been more vocal about racial and social injustices. But this movement is far from new. It has deep roots that date back decades.

What is different about today’s athletes is the platforms they have. They do not rely on the press and television to decide if people hear their message. They can go to social media and broadcast to the world. Able to bypass any suppression of speech or misrepresentation of views. Many have adopted other ways to protest and draw awareness (see LeBron James above). Looking back, I will highlight previous athletes that paved the way for future generations.
