Colin Kaepernick is one of the most recognizable figures of today’s political activism by athletes. His stance against racism wasn’t new. As we’ve seen, many others before him did similarly. What was different about his activism is how it resonated with other athletes and spurred the current movement. Although controversial, he consulted with a military veteran before kneeling for the anthem. It was his way to highlight racism but not insult the flag. His gesture cost Kaepernick his NFL career as he is still not on a roster.
