Tom Flores: Coaching Career
Flores went on to become an assistant coach for the Raiders under the legend John Madden. When Madden retired in 1979, a pioneer in his own right, Al Davis, hired Flores. After going 9-7 in his first season, Flores began the next slowly out of the gates.
With a 2-3 start, murmurs of his firing began, but the Iceman displayed his coolness as a coach. He was able to guide the team to a 9-2 finish to cap off the regular season. In the postseason, Oakland became the first Wild Card team to win the Super Bowl.
In 1982 Flores was voted Coach of the Year, and only three years after the first, the Raiders won another title in 1983. Tom resigned from Oakland after the 1987 season. He then became the president and GM of the Seahawks, where he eventually coached three seasons. In fact, he and Mike Ditka are the only two people in NFL history to win titles as a player, assistant, and head coach.
