Takeaways From SUPER Wildcard Weekend

Julio Cortez/The Associated Press

The only thing surprising about the Tampa Bay vs. Washington game was how close it was.

The Bucs ended up winning 31-23 behind 381 passing yards and 2 touchdown passes from Tom Brady. How in the world is he doing this at 43 years old? How? He looks like he’s gotten younger this year. Literally!

Anyways, Brady wasn’t the main story coming out of this one. Not even the Bucs victory is either. The thing that’s got everyone talking from this game was the play from Washington’s quarterback Taylor Heinickie.

Heinicke went from online taking classes at Old Dominion, according to Al Michaels on the NBC broadcast, to being the talk of the NFL. The guy definitely earned himself a couple million dollars next year being a back-up somewhere.

Heinicke played really well against a solid Buccaneers defense in the playoffs. He finished the game with over 300 passing yards, a passing touchdown, and 46 rushing yards and a rushing score. His numbers are impressive, but was most impressive was the way he did it.

The 27 year old looked like Steve Young out there. Obviously, he’s no Steve Young, but from the way he carried himself, the way his team responded to him, and how he was able to scramble around the pocket and run the ball, or find the open reciever, looked a lot like Steve Young, or Aaron Rodgers for the young fellas out there who missed out on the greatness of Young.

Cheers too Heinicke to securing the bag somewhere next season.
