In a highly anticipated first-round matchup between Murray State’s Ja Morant and Marquette’s Markus Howard, it was Morant who came out on top, guiding his Racers team to a 83-64 upset win.
Morant put up 17 points, 16 rebounds, and 11 rebounds to record the first triple-double in the NCAA tournament since 2012, when Michigan State’s Draymond Green pulled off the feat.
It was Morant’s third triple-double of the season, joining Andre Iguodala, Hassan Whiteside, Stephane Lasme and Kyle Collinsworth (who did it twice) as the only players with three or more triple-doubles in a season over the past 20 seasons.
Howard did his best trying to keep Marquette in the game, putting up 26 points.
