Wow.
There’s a good chance the NBA does cancel the 2019-20 season, which makes this possibility frightening. According to NBA Bylaws 6.23, if the season ends prior to April 1, the team with the best record will be crowned NBA champions.
The NBA has never acted on this bylaw, but there’s a first for everything (maybe not everything). However, this contingency does make a little sense. The league will hand out MVP, ROTY, DPOY, etc. awards. Why not the Larry O’Brien trophy?
The counter-argument: the champs earn their title in the playoffs, unlike the other awards previously mentioned. This is why the bylaw does include an unusual addition.
