NBA Considering Incentives for Midseason Tournament Winner

However, NBA commissioner, Adam Silver, also wants to add a midseason tournament featuring all 30 teams. The tournament would be played early in the season to stay away from other sports events. It would most likely be played in early December–between Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Silver came up with some incentives to push teams and players to participate. Players and coaches who take part in the tournament would be gifted a bonus, along with an extra first round draft pick for the tournament winner.

Also included in discussions, has been the idea of making tournament wins count as double in a teams’ regular season win total.

While it is nowhere near being approved just yet, there is still a lot to consider. Since the tournament would take place during the regular season, teams risk losing players to injury in games that matter towards a championship. Players may also be unmotivated to play their best since the extra draft pick could eventually take their spot on a team.
