When Kevin Durant was 8 years old, he told his mom he would play in the NBA when he grows up.

Before KD began his speech, he reminded his mom that he told her this moment would come when he was young. His mother, Wanda, said in an interview with ESPN that after the 8 year old Kevin told her about his goals she responded:

“I expected him to come back the next day or so with his answer, but he came back right away, and nothing had changed.
So, I told him that I was going to push him very hard, and from that moment to [Monday] night, he’s done it. He’s worked so hard and off of negative commentary at times, but he did it. He’s an NBA champion.”

Kevin famously thanked his mother for her support in his MVP speech.
