James Harden was the Sixth Man of the Year in 2012, as he helped lead the Thunder, alongside Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, to the NBA Finals. After the season, OKC made the decision that they could not afford to pay Harden when they had other players to pay namely Durant, Westbrook and Serge Ibaka.

Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey identified the ceiling of Harden was much greater if he was given the usage rate of a star player and that is exactly what he has become in Houston. Last season, Harden won the league MVP after winning his first scoring title.
