Patrick Beverly Never Forgets his Childhood

“Mouths need to be fed, you know? Coming from where I come from, I didn’t have the luxury of having a trust fund. Or money from generations. Or the luxury of hoppin’ into the family business, you know?” Beverly added, “It’s either hoop or you sell dope.”

Until recently, Beverly’s mother, Lisa, had no idea her son sold drugs. He said he learned from Lisa’s boyfriends because “they were all drug dealers. I got the schooling from all the guys that she dated, and that’s the norm in Chicago.” To this, Lisa responded, “It breaks my heart. I feel like I failed him.”
