Last year was supposed to be a rebuilding year for the Pittsburgh Pirates after they traded ace starting pitcher Gerrit Cole and franchise player Andrew McCutchen last offseason. The Pirates shocked everyone by playing great in the first half, which surprisingly made them buyers at last year’s trade deadline.

That success clearly took the fans by surprise as well, considering the Pirates have drawn big crowds when they were contending in the past but failed to fill up PNC Park last year.
