March Madness Chaos: Breaking Down All the Action From the First Weekend of the “Big Dance”

In addition to Oral Roberts miraculous run, Abilene Christian, a 14th seed, won their first round matchup against the Texas Longhorns. However, the Wildcats got demolished in the second round by the UCLA Bruins.

Those Bruins have had the longest journey of any team remaining in the tournament. They were apart of the final four teams selected to the Tourney, so they have had to play a game to get to the field of 64 bracket.

UCLA beat Michigan State in their first four matchup. As a result, they gained the 11th seed in the East region and earned the privilege of playing the sixth seeded BYU Cougars.

Nick Cronin’s squad took down BYU and then marched past Abilene Christian to reach the Sweet 16 where they will be playing the SEC Champs: the Alabama Crimson Tide.

Another 11 seed has managed to make the Sweet 16: The Syracuse Orange. Jim Boeheim’s squad trounced San Diego State in their first round matchup and then snuck past West Virginia to reach the Sweet 16 where they will be facing off against the second seeded Houston Cougars in the Midwest region.

Some other notable upsets were Ohio and North Texas, two 13 seeds, slayed Goliath in their first round matchups.

The Oregon State Beavers, the 12th seed in the Midwest Region, bested Tennessee and Oklahoma State to make it to the Sweet 16 where Thet will be playing Loyola Chicago who upset the top seed Illinois to advance.

The seventh seeded Oregon Ducks took down National Player of the Year Luka Garza and the Iowa Hawkeyes to advance to next weekend’s action where they will be facing off against conference rival USC, a sixth seed, who trounced Kansas in the second round.

Did you get lost reading all of that? I did writing it. Just know that the The first weekend of the NCAA tournament were a ton of upsets. In fact, every seed, except for a 16th seed, won a game, according to Ryen Russillo of The Ringer.

With that being said, every upset comes with disappointment from the team that lost unexpectedly. No conference felt that disappointment more than the Big Ten.
