According to the NBA’s official duties for referees, The officials have the power to render decisions for infractions of rules committed inside or outside the boundary lines. This includes periods when the game may be stopped for any reason. When a personal foul or violation occurs, an official will blow his/her whistle to terminate play.

This fan was certainly just pulling a funny prank, but if this were to happen in a Game 7 buzzer-beater play, I don’t believe anyone would find it funny, and the fan that caused it would have a hard time finding a way out of the arena without being attacked.

The morale of the story is that it’s not smart to show up to a game and play ref. The NBA officials are there for a reason, and it’s not to be mocked. These guys have a hard enough time getting criticism from the other fans.
