Former Oakland A’s catcher Bruce Maxwell, who became the first MLB player to take a knee during the national anthem, was the subject of discussion during the baseball winter meetings on Thursday.
Maxwell, who’s a free agent, was arrested in October and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. While that could very well be the reason why he isn’t signed yet, one anonymous executive claims it’s the anthem issue.
“It’s the kneeling thing that might keep him from getting another job, not the arrest,” one major-league executive told The Chronicle as the winter meetings wrapped up Thursday. “Owners aren’t going to want to deal with that whole anthem issue.”
At the very least, Maxwell is a platoon-type player who’s a defensive catcher and a sub-par hitter. So in no way is this a Colin Kaepernick situation.
Yet, it’s interesting that a GM brought up the issue of the anthem.
