14. Rough Early Childhood

Following Dwyane’s parents divorce during his early childhood, his mother received custody of him and his sister. On top of growing up in the dangerous south side of Chicago, his mother was constantly battling her addiction to heroin, cocaine, and alcohol. Dwyane’s mother, Jolinda, was even incarcerated multiple times for over a month while Dwyane and his sister were kids.

One day, Dwyane’s sister told him that she was taking him to see a movie but took him to his father’s house where he would be raised before going off to college. Dwyane’s mother has made a miraculous recovery and now serves the community as an ordained Baptist preacher.
